The most important issue is to lower the salt food content and to excercise. American diet is filled in salt and even if you never touch a salt shaker, you probably get too much of it in your diet. A rule of thumb is not to eat processed foods (nothing canned, no processed meats such cold cuts or hot dogs, no fast food or even restaurant food unless it is prepared fresh). Also when shopping for food in supermarket, never buy anything with more than 250 mg of sodium per serving. This with an adequate excercise program has been shown to help with lowering the blood pressure. Such lifestyle modifications are not easy, but are the surest way to success. Good luck!

I have pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure of the LUNGS)….surprisingly my body blood pressure is NORMAL… go figure… HOWEVER, I also have congestive heart failure and my cardiologist took me TOTALLY OFF SALT….. I now use a POTASIUM based product called NO SALT that tastes pretty much like regular table salt but with NONE of the high blood pressure problems… I am also on a medium dose of lasix ever day which is a diuretic which also helps to eliminate salt from one’s body thus lowering blood pressure. I would NOT recommend taking yourself off your meds… but TRY to lower your salt intake to only 2000 mgs a day—which is NOTHING MORE THEN one and 1/2 of those TINY salt packets you get at a fast food take out place…. ALso, eat NOTHING from a JAR, CAN or BOX as they are ALL processed with high amounts of SODIUM…. That is what I have to do… no spagetti sauce unless I make it myself with NO SALT… no pizza, no friend foods, it’s a rather boring menu, but I’d rather eat the stuff I CAN then die any younger then I am already going to.

Exercise daily, cut down on salt, try yoga to help relax.
